A Port Labourer is responsible for assisting with the loading, unloading, and movement of cargo, equipment, and materials in a port, dock, or terminal. The role involves manual labour, operating machinery, and following safety procedures to ensure efficient port operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Load and unload cargo from ships, trucks, and containers.
  • Industrial cleaning.
  • Tallying.
  • Handballing.
  • Traffic marshalling.
  • Pinning.
  • Secure cargo using ropes, chains, or other equipment to prevent shifting or damage.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, or other machinery (if trained and certified).
  • Assist in the storage, stacking, and movement of goods within the port or warehouse.
  • Perform manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, and sorting cargo.
  • Inspect cargo for damage and report issues to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Follow health, safety, and environmental regulations at all times.
  • Assist port operators and crane drivers with cargo operations.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Skills & Requirements:

  • Physical strength and stamina to perform heavy manual labour.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety practices.
  • Teamwork and communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Forklift or machinery operation license (advantageous but not required).
  • Full UK Driving Licence is preferred.
  • Previous experience in port, warehouse, or construction work is an asset.
